What happens when men in modern Russia feel they have not lived up to their ideals of masculinity?  The global economic downturn, changing roles for women, new ideas about fatherhood and family life as well as other cultural and social changes all may push men to feel they have not achieved the social status to which they would feel entitled by fulfilling those ideals. My research project is exploring the Russian men’s life histories and narratives about contemporary global and local configurations of masculinity. I aim to investigate what it means to be a man for Russians, how ideologies of masculinity impinge upon and define their lived experience and what role cultural, economical and legal environments play in these processes.
