6. Sustainability in the context of cancer: the significance of the environment.

The environment which surrounds cells can have a huge impact on their survival. In the case of cancer cells, successful treatment can be influenced by the surrounding area. This image depicts the interactions between cells from the bone marrow (large and flat) and leukaemic cells (small and round). Our research is investigating the effect this interaction has on the survival of leukaemic cells during treatment, in particular the possibility that the normal cells in the bone marrow might be influenced by the leukaemic cells to protect them. Fluorescent labels were used to target specific proteins to show the architecture and associations of these cell types using microscopy.
